HEALING HASHIMOTO’S: BY TAKING THE RIGHT SUPPLEMENTS
I often get asked what supplements I take and recommend. In fact, it seems to be a burning question. So in this episode of Georgina Szabo TV I am going to share with you what my functional medicine doctor Stephanie Daniel recommended for me upon my first meeting with her.
My name is Georgina Szabo and I help people with Hashimoto’s disease reclaim their health. I was down the same path- got diagnosed with Hashimoto’s in 2017 after multiple miscarriages. Instead of just taking a pill I wanted to find out WHY I had Hashimoto’s to begin with so that I could really heal my body vs simply addressing a condition and putting a Band-Aid on it. After working with Functional Medicine doctor Stephanie Daniel I was able to put my Hashimoto’s disease in remission within 6 months and get pregnant naturally at age 39, and gave birth to a healthy baby girl. It lights me up to share all my knowledge and resources to help others struggling with Hashimoto’s get their life back.

I see a lot of supplements advertised these days for thyroid disorders and Hashimoto’s alike. Before I met Dr. Daniel I was on a hunt to figure out what could speed up my healing process. I was ready to take anything that would help me feel better. Sounds familiar?
Through my search I came across Dr. Izabella Wentz’s book titled “Hashimoto’s Protocol” and went through it as fast as I could. In her book she shares about her Hashimoto’s healing journey along with supplement recommendations. Me not knowing a lot about supplements, I figured the more I get, the more it would help me. So I bought nearly all of the supplements that could potentially improve my health. By the time my 1st meeting with Functional Medicine Doctor Stephanie Daniel arrived, I had 2 bags of supplements that I was taking. I took it with me to the meeting and got to show it all to Dr. Daniel. What can I say? She saw that I was very eager to get better 🙂
Long story short, after my 2-hr meeting with her discussing everything from family history to lifestyle habits, work and home environments, products I use she ordered a very thorough blood testing and stool testing to get a better picture of my health.
After the results came in, we went through all my numbers and she told me exactly which supplements I needed to take and how much, and which ones I didn’t need at all. Turns out, I only needed about ⅓ of the supplements that I had purchased and she recommended additional supplements specific to my needs that I didn’t even think I would need!
It is so very important to test to see what your levels are. For example, I was low in iron, but without a test, it’s hard to know how many pills to take a day so that we supplement the right amount. Same goes for Vitamin D or magnesium, multivitamin…etc.
Another thing important to note is that quality does matter. And when we have a million different brands to choose from these days with jazzy labels & ads, it’s hard to know just by looking at the labels what we really get. For example, some supplements include fillers, are manufactured poorly and stored at the wrong temperature. So it’s really important to know the source. Yet another reason why working with a Functional Medicine doctor can be so valuable. With their guidance we can get sufficient supplementation with quality supplements that will be sure to deliver the effect we are aiming for.

In summary, without testing, there is no real way of knowing what we are lacking. We could be wasting a lot of time and resources buying supplements that we don’t need, or don’t work, and not getting the ones we need. Plus, if we double up on certain supplements it can have a negative effect on our body too! My FM doctor is like a chemist, she knows how much of what is in each supplement ensures I get the right amount.

As always, I recommend following a nutrient dense, whole foods diet rich in antioxidants and eating a rainbow diet as a base. Buying organic anytime you can. Stay away from gluten, dairy, soy, corn, peanuts, and sugar. I took it very seriously and stayed away from all forms of sugar during my Hashimoto’s healing protocol. Even maple syrup, agave, coconut sugar and honey. I love using dates instead and monk fruit is a great sweetener too!
