HEALING HASHIMOTO’S: ONE OF THE MAIN REASONS I DEVELOPED HASHIMOTO’S

Welcome to Episode 7 of Georgina Szabo TV! I found out that I had Hashimoto’s disease in the process of trying to get pregnant but kept miscarrying. Instead of just taking a pill I wanted to get down to root causes so I could really heal my body vs simply addressing a condition and putting a Band-Aid on it. After working with Functional Medicine doctor Stephanie Daniel I was able to put my Hashimoto’s disease in remission within 6 months and get pregnant naturally at age 39, and gave birth to a healthy baby girl. In the process I found my true purpose, which is helping others reverse Hashimoto’s so you can reclaim your health too and live a fulfilling life.

In this episode of Georgina Szabo TV, I am going to share one of the main reasons I developed Hashimoto’s so that you can see check and see if this could be one of the root causes of your Hashimoto’s too!

As Dr. Tom O’Bryan explains- When you are standing in the pond of autoimmunity and the waterfall is pounding down on you, your best course of action is to go back upstream and figure out where your autoimmunity is coming from.

Upon meeting Functional Medicine doctor Stephanie Daniel, she interviewed me to get an idea of the symptoms I was experiencing, family history, diet, working environments and places I lived so that she could see what I could have potentially been exposed to. We were able to pin point the major root cause of my Hashimoto’s: toxic mold!

About 6 years before I got diagnosed with Hashimoto’s I lived at a house that had black mold covering the entire walls of our master walk in closet. At the time I didn’t really know much about mold besides it looks yucky. We mentioned it to our landlord who came out to take care of it by spraying Bleach all over it!!

Now I know that mold itself is toxic and release mycotoxins in the air, combine that with Bleach that’s super toxic too, together they create another dangerous toxic chemical bomb! And we ended up breathing that in night after night since our master closet was attached to our bedroom where we slept. And of course, our clothes were covered by it too that we put on, that touched our skins and all that toxic stuff went inside our bloodstream through our skin too. Did you know that chemicals make their way inside our bloodstream through our skin within 26 seconds? Scary!

We lived in this house for 3 years! Imagine the day-to-day impact that we were exposed to.

When we look back on the timeline of events and my Thyroid hormone (TSH) levels in my medical chart we can see that this is when everything started going out of whack. Due to most conventional institutions only looking at TSH levels, I didn’t found out I had Hashimoto’s until a couple of years later when I had an entire thyroid panel test. Also, the ranges that are considered normal by conventional medicine are a lot higher than Functional Medicine standards.

So the 2 big take aways from my story-

1) When you see mold, you need to have a professional involved to remediate the house properly. If they can’t do that, you need to get out and don’t bring your stuff with you because it too is contaminated. This may sound like drastic measures but this is the only way to recover. If you don’t remove the source, you are never going to get well. Until you eliminate it entirely from your environment, you are repeatedly exposing yourself to a trigger.

And make sure to get proper testing to see what you have. A functional medicine doctor can help ordering the test and reading the results to provide you with a suitable detox protocol with very specific binders. Binders help pull these toxins out.

2) Only looking at thyroid hormone (TSH) will not give you a full picture. You need to have a full thyroid panel done. I shared what that includes in a previous blog post, I will link to it below this episode.

Now, could you have been exposed to mold if you didn’t see anything growing on the walls? Absolutely. Mold can grow behind the walls that we can’t see. Sometimes we can’t even smell it. Toxic molds may not be seen, but can come about as a result of water leaks. So the best thing you can do is have your home tested. Many conditions like fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, sudden weight gain and weight loss resistance are all common conditions linked to biotoxic illness from mold.

You can have a mold inspection by a company who specializes in mold or you can get an ERMI – Environmental Relative Moldiness Index – kit to test yourself. The analysis from this test can be used by researchers to estimate the levels and types of mold inside a property. The test is done by collecting a dust sample. For wood floor or tiles you can get the ERMI Cloth Kit, for carpet flooring best to use the ERMI Vacuum Kit. Dr. Daniel ordered this for me too, so once again, if you work with a Functional Medicine doctor they can help you order the test and explain the results.

As a reminder- you can always get tested for mold by getting a mycotoxin test to see if you have any mold toxicity. Taking the guessing out of the picture is a must.
